To my total surprise, a good hair day!
...and my hair wasn't looking good, to be honest. As you know, I was 'sposed to fly to Texas today, but instead I was going to mope around the house.
Breadfruit was happy to have more than 12 hours with me after being away a week, so took me on an outing, which started at a cafe, not just any cafe, but the only cafe this side of Napoli that makes cappuccino better th
an he does. And, trust me, don't try to ask an Italian barrista to make you a nonfat cappuccino. Do you remember when a customer asked for a side of spaghetti to go with her risotto in Big Night? Well, Secondo has nothing on Saverio the barrista. Even so, he managed to make this pretty pattern for me. But, I was still mopey.
Next, we went to the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. While Breadfruit was buying the tickets, I spotted a large group of women posing for pictures. And the interesting thing was, not one had a relaxer!
You know how it's always a pain when you want to take a group photo, and there are at least 3 cameras and someone always has to sacrifice themselves to step out of the picture? So, I went over and offered to be their photographer...1,2,3 say NATURAL HAIR! Big smiles all around. [See Ally, I'm not that shy.] Aren't they (we!) a beautiful group?
Then, it happened. One of the women handed me her camera and told me she felt like she knew me, because she reads my blog! I thought this might happen one day, but I thought it would be in an airport.
Donna is one of those women I aspire to be. She has gorgeous hair, but I assume she's over it because she had her locks all locked up in a braid. I should have asked -- she probably just gets sick and tired of people complementing her and asking about it all day long and needs a little peace.
And, in case you didn't see her comment, this was no ordinary group of women. They were members of Nappturality!
After that pause, Breadfruit and I went up the stairs to the first floor of exhibits, talking about the criticism the museum has gotten -- basically, being too inclusive. Even so, this photo in the two-story collage of photos with two Swiss flags, lots of cash, and an American flag through us through a loop.
The first piece I saw (besides the collage) was Portrait of Aunt Winnie by Albert Chong, an artist whom I had just met the previous day. I don't normally name-drop, but I had never seen work in a museum done by someone I know, so you'll have to indulge me. Sometimes it pays to be FOS (friend of Steve).
After leaving the museum, we did a little shopping at SF MOMA, then headed to the Ferry Buliding. The good news is that we found street parking, we founf it quickly, AND the meter was broken. The bad news was that we missed the Farmer's Market, but settled on a tea cermony at the Imperial Tea House. I got some genmaicha (toasted rice green tea) to bring home, and not just because it sounds like Jamaica, which is spelled Giamaica in Italian. We did more shopping on Union Street and then headed over to see Drew's new place. We had dinner at Tres Agaves, then headed home via SFO to pick up Breadfruit's delayed luggage -- the one with all the Swiss chocolate and Italian coffee.
All in all, I had a great day in spite of myself. And running into Donna made it extra special! I have got to get on the Nappturality list.
11 of your thoughts:
So glad that you had a wonderful day inspite of not being able to make it to Texas. Too cool that you met the ladies from Nappturality and you were even recognized! I MUST get your autograph when you make it down south to Texas :-). I'm curious, did Donna have Sisterlocks or traditional locks?
It has been reading your blog, the picture of your and the ladies from Nappturality was nice and it just shows it's a small world. I had planned on going to the DFW Gathering also, I got hooked on reading the blogs on the Sisterlock ladies because I am from a small town and there are no other ladies here with locks.I don't have Sisterlocks, but traditional locks. I have started a blog of my own, although I am not very good at it yet. :-)
I think Donna's locks are palmrolled, alhtough they are quite tiny like SLs. If you click on her name, it takes you to her webpage.
Brunsli, You have no idea how disappointed I was to learn you weren't coming to Dallas after I heard you were the big surprise. I'm glad to hear that all was not lost!

...such a name dropper! :) Your Saturday sounded (and looked) fun... and included genmaicha tea, my favorite...
-Steve (FOC)
have you ever tried shaving it all off? I think you'd look cool in one of those feminine mohawks too.
Thanks for sharing your meeting Donna and the ladies from Nappturality and sorry we didn't get our big surprise of meeting you!! Soon...Soon.
You ladies really get your party on!!!
One a separate note:
The African Diaspora is one of my favorite topics! In fact I attended an educational symposium last week & the Diaspora was the focus. The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History located in Detroit has an awesome exhibit "And Still We Rise" which focuses on the Diaspora past-today. If you make it to Detroit, the exhibit is a must see! http://www.maah-detroit.org.
For those that do not know what the Diaspora is, it is defined by two distinct phenomenons: 1) the dispersion of humankind from the African Continent throughout the world which is based on scientific data that have validated Africa as the birthplace of humankind, and 2) the forced scattering of African people from the African Continent through captivity and worldwide enslavement.
Peace,
Bygbaby
I must say, you are my kind of girl! You got out and ran into our very own sisterhood. Missed ya and hope to see you soon.
